others’lives in the Delhi riots I write in ref er ence to Taniya Dutta’s ar ti cle New Delhi: Fam i lies grieve after more peo ple killed in es -
ca lat ing vi o lence (Fe bru ary 27): while it seems fairly clear to me that the ri ots in Delhi were an an gry
re ac tion to the protests against the Cit i zen ship Amend ment Act that was passed in In dia’s Par lia ment
re cently, they were es sen tially car ried out by mis cre ants with a pre dis po si tion to vi o lent be hav iour.
Lives were lost, Hindu-Mus lim ten sions were ex posed and In dia’s democ racy was made to look bad at
a time when US Pres i dent Don ald Trump was vis it ing the coun try.
Ul ti mately though, it was a re lief to dis cover sto ries of Hin dus sav ing the lives of Mus lims and vice
versa. This just goes to prove that In di ans are still largely peace-lov ing peo ple
– and therein lies a hope ful story when we talk about the fu ture of our coun try.
