Mumbai's greenery issue high lights
Challenges of progress
Iwrite to you in reference to your article India's supreme court hails feeling of trees for new Mumbai metro (october 7)should we celebrate the order from the highest court in India to the government of Maharashtra to refrain from cutting down trees in a bid to improve metro connectivity? On the one hand the order ensures the protection of 2700 trees which act as the lungs of Mumbai.
On the other the metro project aims to reduce the burden on the city's already existing rail system.
If ,as the government claims, the trains are over crowded that an average of 10 people die every day, then is not a project worth pursuing?
This debate just goes to show the challenges of governance, especially in a rapidly-growing country
such as India
