Letter Published in BM on 28Mar 20 Age is not just a number
Ragavan Krishnamachary writes, your story elaborated on the on-going crisis due to coronavirus and how the elderly are fearing living in old age homes. (For the elderly, it is the age of fear). Restricted transport movement has also restricted the number of staff at these centres. Even though the consumables are reaching the footsteps of homes, the prices are very high and the poor inmates are facing the music. Such homes are not allowing visitors from outside and are following safety measures as per the government’s advice

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 28Mar 20 India's reaching out to the poor. That's the way it should be K. Ragavan, Bengaluru, India The recent announcement of Indian Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is laudable. She has announced an economic relief package for senior citizens and people who are likely to be hit the hardest due to the disruption brought by the pandemic. The relief package will provide a safety net to a lot of people. Around 800 million people will get free cereals and cooking gas apart from cash through direct cash transfers for the next three months. This is a humane approach, and such steps by the Indian government would likely help the poor tide over this hard time. Hope the deadly coronavirus disappears in the next three months and life can start coming back to normal.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 24Mar 20Jail conditions are a great cause of worry
In reference to the report New York’s prisons record 38 coronavirus cases (March 22): it is an alarming sign that so many inmates, even apart from former Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, were found positive for coronavirus. The report mentioned 12 staff members as well. None of this bodes well for the more than 2.2 million people jailed in the US. We also need to think about prisoners in less developed countries. In tightly cramped jail conditions, the risk will perhaps only fully be realised in the weeks and months to come.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 22Mar 20ndia needs to pause for more than a day to avert a disaster
Regarding Taniya Dutta's report Coronavirus: ‘inevitable’ India will become outbreak hotspot, health experts say (March 21): given the global scenario about how this virus is spreading and with casualties increasing everyday, one should be especially careful. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a speech calling for a one day shutdown. People on Sunday, March 22 are to avoid of stepping out of the house. This will help contain the virus for a day at least, as crowds will refrain from public places and Sunday is when people step out. But this is just one measure to prevent the spread of the virus infecting others. We need to do much more and not just for a day.

K Ragavan writes BM’s cover story Coronavirus anxiety has brought Bengaluru down on its sneeze was meaningful and thought-provoking. On the one hand, though people must be alert and Bengalureans are doing a good job, but on the other hand, fear and anxiety is not healthy. Already the state has taken precautionary measures and the PM’s advice also restricts movement. Despite this, if people are stressed and add to that fake news makes people more panicky. Patients with history of anxiety should make themselves calm. Psychiatrist also advice people to not panic. It is up to the people to take care of themselves and I am confident that Bengalureans will

With reference to the editorial Gantz has a historic opportunity (March 17): In the past year, Israel politics has been in disarray. None of the politicians have demonstrated the right leadership qualities or come up with fitting solutions that prioritise the welfare of the people. Despite his earlier tenure as prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, now mired in corruption charges, has failed this time to secure a majority. Let's hope the Palestinian people have better luck with Gantz in office.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 17Mar 20 Floods and deaths add to Egypt's burden
With reference to The National Editorial In Egypt, floods add to difficulty of fighting pandemic (March 15): while the entire world is focused on tackling the coronavirus, it was disheartening to read about the plight of an already embattled country to now also have to deal with the consequences of poor infrastructure. That the onslaught of rain killed people is a sobering reminder of the cost of development suffering. As if the existing conditions in Egypt were not challenging enough, with the Nile dam dispute far from resolved. The country didn't need this.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 15Mar 20 Optimism in the time of the virus
Regarding the report Coronavirus latest: US declares national emergency as global deaths pass 5,000 (March 14): the article elaborately analysed the on going coronavirus threat and the global casualties and was good, informative read. Today the task before the World Health Organisation and all countries is to control the spread of the virus and prevent further casualties ideally by inventing a cure that is accessible and affordable to all infected.
This virus has not only caused deaths but has also resulted in huge loss for the entire globe. Tourism, trade, the sport and entertainment industries too have been greatly affected. I am happy that the UAE has taken steps to protect its people and also offered humanitarian help to other countries. Let's hope everyone affected recovers.

People should also follow all advice
K Ragavan writes today the tough task before the WHO and all countries is to overcome this virus to prevent future casualties either by discovering a medicine or by taking preventive measures to ensure the virus does not spread further. This virus has not only brought deaths, but also caused huge losses. India has made an attempt and tried out a new medicine at the ICMR. However, this is a dangerous virus which spreads fast and India has been affected only recently. So apart from the government’s measures, people also should be more alert and avoid travelling and follow the instructions.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 10Mar 20 Regarding the report India's Yes Bank seizure triggers investor and depositor panic (March 6): the recent cap on the withdrawal limit at 50,000 rupees (Dh2,483) from Indian Yes Bank created panic among depositors recently. The Reserve Bank of India has made its decision on the bank's irregularities and the poor customers will be inconvenienced. Senior citizens were already unhappy with their deposit rates. It is sad that people are worried about their deposits. The Reserve Bank and the government should come forward and assure citizens that their money is safe and work to solve this issue. Even though the RBI has no control over private banks, periodical monitoring for their lending to customers should be done.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 5Mar 20  I write in reference to Mina Al-Oraibi’s article With Allawi’s failure to form government, Iraq’s political dysfunction at new heights (March 3): this was a fascinating piece but also a very sobering one.
The story of modern-day Iraq is sad because after decades of one man and his regime controlling the destiny of an entire country, there is now much discord within the political system. It is tempting to assume that this is the outcome of divides in society but, if the past few months are a demonstration of anything, it is that the people are united in demanding that the political class come together to fix the country’s problems.
The tragedy is that the country is resource rich: it is blessed with oil wealth but also some of the most dynamic people in the region. It’s just a case of finding a way to tap into both resources and get the best out of them. But for that to happen, the ruling elite must bury their political and sectarian differences to build a nation that has been broken for far too long. Once the cradle of a great civilisation, Iraq needs to be restored to its past glory. Its people deserve nothing less.
