Letter Published inThe National UAE on 31oct 18 Lion air crash is a tragedy that must be investigatedYour story Indonesian plane crashes into sea off Jakarta (October 29) was sad to read. The aircraft, flown by a 31-year-old captain and carrying 187 people, vanished from the radar 13 minutes after take-off and plunged into the water. However, the real cause is not known. Lion Air should investigate this incident since the aircraft was only a few months old. After the recent air accidents, people must be thinking twice before taking flights. I pray for the victims.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on 30 Oct 18  US needs gun control laws    When will deadly shootings in the US stop? The news Gunman kills 11 at Pittsburgh synagogue (KT, Oct 29) was sad to read. This attack by a lone gunman killed 11 people and injured a few more. Such attacks on innocent people, especially in a place of worship can never be justified. Hate crime, racism, and in human acts such as these should not be tolerated. US should implement stringent measures to avoid such incidents. Perhaps, it should take a relook at its gun laws to save the innocent people. Why should innocence shred into pieces when hatred finds a vent through bullets?-K Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Letter Published in The National UAE on 30 Oct 18 Measure should be taken to prevent another PittsburghYour story Pittsburgh synagogue gunman said he wanted all Jews to die (October 28) was a sad read. This attack by a lone gunman was a first in US history, with the deaths of 11 people and many injured. It should be rightly condemned. The motive behind the attack, of eradicating the Jewish community, is utterly outrageous.Hate crime, racism and inhumane acts like this are completely intolerable. The US should implement stringent measures to protect innocent people against this type of attack.Killing of any kind is heinous but in a public place or prayer hall is particularly despicable. I pray for the innocent victims.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in Khaleejtimes UAE on 29Oct 18    The UAE's vision for the national space industry is realising fast. Today the emirate will be achieving a milestone by launching the first Emirati-made satellite, KhalifaSat, into space. It will be a proud moment for all and encourage more and more to invest their time in this space. The article KhalifaSat Countdown: Launch to signal dawn of new space industry (KT, Oct 28) offered great details on the project and highlighted the eminent role being played by South Korea and Japan in helping with the launch. Kudos to the team and the vision of the leadership.

With the collaboration of South Korea, KhalifaSat will be launched from Japan today. UAE has many honours and achievements to its name and this satellite launching is not only another feather in its cap but also reflects and will promote further international co-operation, which is too often in short supply today. Regarding your story India's Virat Kohli joins elite club of 10,000-plus run-scorers (October 24), the Indian cricket player Virat Kohli's magnificent showing in his 205th one-day cricket international, against the West Indies in Vizakhapatnam, has knocked the spots off former master Sachin Tendulkar's earlier record and was amazing to behold. He was rightly complimented by his fellow record-holder. In recent years Kohli's tremendous performance and record-breaking has been laudable. It is little wonder he is loved by millions of cricket fans. Kudos to a great player.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 26 Oct 18  Not a wise decision
This is in reference to the ongoing crisis surrounding the Sabarimala temple protests in the Indian state of Kerala (“Death threat to woman who dared to visit Sabarimala”, Gulf News, October 24). Despite the Supreme Court’s verdict, which allows women entry to the Sabarimala temple, the peaceful protest against the decision turned violent. On one hand I applaud the Indian judiciary for the decisions they have made this year, however, this verdict, in my opinion, is not favourable to the people of India. The decision hurts the sentiments of the people. This verdict has hurt the sentiments of the people and has changed a very old practice. Any religious faith should not be disturbed. In the long term, this verdict may not be a palatable one. The ultimate sufferer of such decisions are the common people. I hope the state government can deal with this crisis diplomatically.

It is laudable – if somewhat unsurprising – that the Chinese have constructed the globe’s longest sea-bridge at the cost of billions of dollars. This will have significant and far-reaching consequences for China’s construction and manufacturing sectors and will be a boon for trade. In my country, for example, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also introduced healthcare policies for senior citizens. The UAE is taking the utmost care of its senior citizens. Letter Published in The National UAE on 22Oct 18I write in reference to your article On the coat-tails of #MeToo, is it finally time for a big Bollywood clean-up? (October 11): finally MJ Akbar has resigned amid the #MeToo controversy.
The recent allegations against the former Indian minister for external affairs from various journalists, his denial and now his resignation are dramatic developments.
He could have stepped down as soon as allegations arose but his resignation is nevertheless welcome. Now the ball is in his court to prove his innocence. Will he succeed in his mission?
There is much at stake here both for the journalists who complained about their former boss and anyone accused of such allegations. Where cases are proven, authorities must act on complainants’ grievances.

The world has been told that his death occurred during a physical altercation but as you rightly argued, a thorough investigation should be carried out and those responsible should be held to account.

The recent accident near the Joda Pathak railway gate in Amritsar, while devotees were watching the Dasara festival, was truly horrific. Even if the driver had sounded the horn, they might not have heard because of the noise of the festival. Despite previous accidents at level crossing gates in India, it seems lessons have not been learned. The harsh reality is that no amount of sympathy or compensation will bring back those who have been lost. I pray for the victims.

He could have stepped down as soon as allegations were levelled against him. However, his resignation is a welcome decision. Now the ball in his court to prove his innocence. Will MJ succeed in his mission? The fact that the journalists complained about their former boss disregarding their reputation shows that the incidents are true. This is in reference to the recent allegations made by Indian actors and journalists as part of the #MeToo movement. Apart from this, politicians have also been blamed for being inappropriate and harassing others. The present union minister of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) and former newspaper editor M. J. Akbar has come under fire for his behaviour towards women in the past. Those journalists who boldly complained against Akbar are very courageous and are not bothered about their reputation. This shows that their allegations might be true. The NDA government should act against Akbar immediately and take care of the women who have told their stories to the world. It is a sad state of affairs. This is highly shocking and unacceptable in our civil society. Women need to feel safe in their workplace and not be threatened by their boss’ behaviour.

The key reasons why American brands are so well-known and popular globally are their exceptional marketing strategies, world-beating delivery and distribution systems and above all, their superb customer service. A simple interaction with Amazon will demonstrate that.
It is for these reasons, which are easy to identify but far harder to replicate, that American brands tend to come first.

During the recent visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed a deal with Moscow for a highly advanced air defence system. It hints at decades of strong relations between India and Russia. Despite the looming threat of US sanctions, India has nevertheless penned the deal. The coming years will be tough as climate chaos starts to take hold at a global level. It is an alarming warning from Debra Roberts, head of the Environmental Planning and Protection Department in Durban, South Africa.
It behoves global leaders to rethink this incredibly important issue and take urgent co-ordinated steps to protect the climate and prevent potential disasters. Will change really happen if some leaders, such as US President Donald Trump, are not willing to participate in the fight against climate change? I fear not.

Yet another victory for Trump
K Ragavan writes that Donald Trump’s nominee Brett Kavanaugh has been sworn in as US Supreme court judge (Victory for Trump in Supreme court) despite the horrific allegations levelled at him by three different women. This is certainly a major victory for the controversial US President. In many ways it demonstrates how powerful he still is in American politics, as well as the desire of Republicans to have a conservative majority in the highest court in the land. But with many people still refusing to believe his denials, Kavanaugh’s place in the court is somewhat tarnished

He offers an excellent run down of governance failures in many places and sheds light on some of history’s most talented leaders, such as Cincinnatus of Rome, who is still being talked about to this day. It is, indeed, very possible that the legendary Roman leader of 2,000 years ago inspired the likes of George Washington of the US and Charles de Gaulle of France. Mr Esler is correct that low-skilled governance is all too prevalent today and those incapable of running modern nations should know when to stop.

Letter Published in KhaleejTimes UAE on8Oct 18Russian missiles won't rock India-Us relations    This is in reference to the recent missile deal signed between India and Russia (India signs $5b defence deal with Russia amid US threat; KT, Oct 6). India has strong relations with Russia and it goes back to decades. The recent deal simply reinforces the relations between the two countries. However, the news should be seen in the light of threat of sanctions from the US. Despite that, India has done things its own way, which is laudable. India's foreign policy of non-interference and straight forward approach to relations makes it a friendly nation, and it should continue on that path.- K. Ragavan, Bengaluru, India

Letter Published in The National UAE on 8Oct 18 Kavanaugh’s place on the Supreme Court is tarnished   I refer to your article US Senate votes to confirm Kavanaugh to to Supreme court (October 7). This is yet another highly dramatic development to emerge in modern American politics. Following the horrific allegations levelled at Supreme Court nominee and now Justice Brett Kavanaugh by three different women, and the anger directed towards him by Democrats and members of the public, the Senate narrowly confirmed his nomination. This is certainly a major victory for the controversial US President, Donald Trump. In many ways it demonstrates how powerful he still is in American politics, as well as the desire of Republicans to have a conservative majority in the highest court in the land. But with many people still refusing to believe his denials, Mr Kavanaugh’s place in the court is somewhat tarnished.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 7 Oct 18 Congratulations to the Nobel peace prize winners
I write in reference to your article Denis Mukwege and Nadia Murad win Nobel Peace prize 2018 (October 6): The National’s article was good to read. The first ever Iraqi winner, Nadia Murad, received the prestigious Nobel Prize along with Congolese gynaecologist Denis Mukwege for their outstanding work on sexual violence and war crimes. Their service to thousands of women psychologically and physically scarred by abuse and violence is truly laudable. Today women across the world need to have their rights and bodies protected and this incredible duo thoroughly deserve the prize. Kudos to them both.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 4Oct 18 Can assault allegations ever change behaviour?I write in reference to Rashmee Roshan Lall’s column From Washington to Bollywood, women are being heard – but are they being listened to? (October 3): I found this article on gender and politics to be both meaningful and highly thought-provoking.As the author rightly argued, from the recent allegations of sexual assault in Washington against President Donald Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, to the claims made by an Indian Bollywood actress against actor Nana Patekar, sexual assault and the behaviour of predatory men is high on the news agenda. But whether it will bring about genuine change and lead to women finally being listened to and protected from the worst excesses of predatory masculinity is, sadly, still very much an open question.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE on 3 Oct 18  Workers need protection in the gruelling summer monthsI write in reference to your article Warning systems could protect workers from summer heat, say health experts(October 2): Gillian Duncan’s article was good to read. The recent study by health experts reveals that warning alarms could be the best way to protect labourers working in the hot summer from developing unpleasant health conditions. It is important to care for those who build our roads, homes and offices and the UAE is already doing so. I’m sure authorities will pay close attention to this study.K Ragavan, Bengaluru
