Letter Published in BM on 31 Oct 19.Palike, this is one of the worst ideas ever K.Ragavan writes, The BBMP’s plans to install statues at various junctions, is a waste of money. Recently, our neighbouring state banned banners as they proved both a distraction and a danger to the motorists and pedestrians. This idea should be aborted until we get good roads and better infrastructure

Letter Published in The National UAE on 30 Oct 19 Sharjah airport photos taken in 1930s gives us idea of UAE progress I write in reference to Emma Day’s article The first plane to touch down in Sharjah 87 years ago: historic images of the UAE’s earliest airport (October 27): it is always fun to look at grainy old black-and-white photographs as they take us back in time and give us an idea of what life must have been like.I had the same warm fuzzy feeling looking at images taken eight-and-a-half decades ago, and preserved all these years, of Sharjah Air Station – especially because I lived in the emirate for about 15 years. The UAE did not exist in 1932 but looking at how sparse the land around the station was gives us an idea of the extent of progress the nation has made, thanks to its visionary leaders. One need only visit Sharjah International Airport today for evidence of the country’s remarkable development.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Perhaps India should get its own petrocurrency
I write to you in reference to your article Is there a case for a petrorupee? (October 27) Jennifer Gnana's article was fun to read and very meaningful. The oil trade is dominated by the dollar, which has become somewhat of a problem because of the US reimposing sanctions on Iran and Russia, in addition to waging a trade war on China. This has made the market more unstable. The third largest consumer of oil is India, maybe it is not such a bad idea for the subcontinent to have its own petrol currency? What a thought-provoking idea indeed.

I write in regard to Ajit Vijaykumar’s report Australia PM Scott Morrison serves water during warm-up match against Sri Lanka (October 25). Given that Sri Lanka are being hosted by Australia for a short three-match Twenty20 series, it was heartening to watch Scott Morrison, the Australian prime minister, serve water to members of the touring party. This gesture spoke volumes about the sporting spirit of the leader and other politicians around the world should follow suit.

K Ragavan writes Bangalore Mirror’s cover story was elaborate on how top executives of big hotels trapped a General Manager of KR Inn hotel (What’s in a name? Key to your riches). Such incidents are sad and should be condemned. Fraudsters are trapping people and people are easily falling in these traps without verifying. In this case Rs 1-2 lakh was transferred to his account without verifying IOCL name, which he has claimed from that company. Only with IFSC and other details, it was transferred. A thorough investigation should be conducted and the cheaters should be booked

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23Oct 19. Mr Erdogan urging Turks to drink tea is sound health adviceWith reference to Liz Cookman’s article President Erdogan: Don’t smoke, drink Turkish tea instead (October 21). It was an interesting read. On the one hand, the Turkish president has attacked the Kurds. Now he seems to be concerned about people’s health. He is opposed to the idea of e-cigarettes and wants his fellow Turks to stick to drinking tea instead. This is not a bad idea but the percentage of smokers has gone up over the years, despite Turkey being one of the largest consumers of tea. It remains to be seen whether the people will follow the advice of their leader.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed was bestowed the Nobel Peace prize for 2019 for his tremendous work for peace with Eritrea, and this was appreciated (“A worthy winner in the name of peace”, Gulf News, October 13). He is a man known for his green legacy, peace and gender equality. He had a long-term vision for his country.
In this young age he was given the Nobel Peace Prize, and this is truly an amazing achievement. His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces congratulated him for this achievement. With this prize, there is new hope in the African region and it will have more peace and stability in the coming days.

A lot of these countries have poor administration in common and it is the people who suffer — a sorry state of affairs. It is sad to read about economic compulsions driving so many citizens across the world to the streets. In my experience, the Spanish are a friendly people and I feel for them now as they protest for their rights. The clashes are a worrying sign for any nation and the leadership will do well to take into account the will of the citizens. Any successful administration will need to prioritise and resolve the grievances of its people.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

I write to you in reference to your article Mexico sends more than 300 illegal migrants back to India (October 18). It was deeply troubling to read about the deportation of illegal immigrants from Mexico to India. The migrant issue seems to be a worldwide phenomenon. It is a complex issue in which security plays a part both for migrants and the country where they arrive. Mexico and the United States have both faced challenges in dealing with this problem. It is hard to begrudge migrants their right to have a decent life in the countries they move to. However, there are proper legal channels that must be adhered to.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 17 oct 19.Good things should come out of the UAE’s friendship with Russia
I write to you in reference to the National Editorial UAE and Russia celebrate longstanding ties (October 15). The visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the UAE underlines two realities: one is the growing influence of Russia in the Middle East and the other is the importance of the UAE in the eyes of the world.
The Russians have immersed themselves in a region where the US, still considered the pre-eminent power in the world, has started to disengage. For its part, the UAE is doing the right thing – and the smart thing – by engaging with Russia even though it has close ties with the US, which is seen as the rival of a country that was once part of the Soviet Union. The UAE has maintained good relations with the international community, focusing on how to make the world a better place. Indeed, the UAE’s partnership with Russia has resulted in positive developments like Hazza Al Mansouri’s visit to space. More progress will no doubt be expected in the years to come.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 16 Oct 19 Kudos to Sourav Ganguly for agreeing to take charge of Indian cricket boardI write to you in reference to your article Sourav Ganguly set to become India cricket chief, says first-class cricketers his priority (October 14): Ganguly seems to be the type of person who embraces challenges. In 2000, he was appointed captain of an Indian team that was rudderless and deflated by recent failures. It took him just one year to turn its fortunes around, making it one of the world’s best sides, and he did it by inspiring his fellow seniors and ushering in a new generation of talented players. Eleven years after he retired from international cricket, the former batsman is set to become president of the BCCI, the body that runs Indian cricket. He takes up the position at a time when it is struggling with administrative problems and allegations of nepotism. It will be Ganguly’s biggest challenge yet as he takes on the task of reforming what is a massive organisation that is set in its ways and has for long been governed by special interests. So whether he succeeds in his role or not, he should be applauded for his decision to take the job.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Indian finance
On the one hand, I applaud the action taken by the Reserve Bank of India to develop economic growth from five per cent and reduced the lending rate interest (“$63 billion of zombie buildings sound warning for Indian banks”, Gulf News, October 6). On the other hand the deposit rates for senior Indian citizens continue to go low, and this is sad. Senior citizens who are non-pensioners and fully dependent on their deposit interest rates are the major sufferers. Citizens who also contributed in private sectors are neglected and this is sad. Will the Indian government take up this important call?

Letter Published in The National UAE on 14Oct 19 Modi-Xi summit key to bringing India and China closer I write to you in reference to your article India and China seek ‘new era’ in ties after leaders meet (October 12): how India and China manage their relations with each other is of vital significance to peace, stability and prosperity for Asia and the world. This is why informal summits like the one being held between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in the southern Indian town of Mamallapuram is important. These informal summits do not necessarily put pressure on either government to produce outcomes in the form of agreements or deals, but they do provide an opportunity for leaders to hold frank discussions with each other.Keeping in mind China’s close relationship with Pakistan, Mr Modi will use the ongoing summit to improve bilateral trade and impress upon Mr Xi the importance of tackling terrorism. Since coming to power in 2014, Mr Modi has focused on diplomacy with all nations, including China, which can only be good for India. I am sure both leaders will come away from Mamallapuram filled with optimism.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

If little is done to stop the further incursion, more lives will be lost and many more people will be left homeless and seeking refuge in other countries. As the story says, there is also a very serious threat of terrorist cells such as ISIS taking advantage of this chaos and flourishing once again, despite the fact it has not been long since its so-called caliphate was destroyed.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

On the other the metro project aims to reduce the burden on the city's already existing rail system.

UAE in space: A milestone
UAE residents got a chance to ask Hazzaa AlMansoori, the first Emirati astronaut questions, while he was onboard the International Space Station (ISS) (“UAE in space: Can you guess the place astronaut Hazzaa AlMansoori took a picture of from space?”, Gulf News, October 1). The article published about this in Gulf News was a good read and this was a dramatic development in the UAE’s history. The country has eradicated the desert concept and made the UAE, a destination for the world to live. The space mission is another feather in the cap of the astronauts. Today, the UAE has been identified on the global map for all areas, be it in the health, transport or education sector.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 3 oct19 Many factors go into road safety but start with vehicle maintenance I write to you in reference to your editorial Minibus deaths highlight need for better safety (October 2).It is striking and indeed shocking that accidents as horrific as the one that killed eight on Monday can happen in a city as well run as Dubai. It goes to show that none of us can ever guarantee safety while travelling. Where I live, accidents are more commonplace. Unfortunately, some of them involve school buses. While driver negligence and poor traffic conditions are common causes in some of India’s crowded cities, reasons can wary from place to place. This is why I appreciate the fact that your editorial refused to blame any one person or organisation for the tragedy this week. That said, the health of the drivers and vehicle maintenance are important first steps that should be taken by transportation companies in order to improve road safety.K Ragavan, Bengaluru
