Letter Publisshed in The National UAE on 30April 18 Ties between the UAE and Japan go back a long way   I write in reference to your article Japanese leader’s visit to UAE aims to strengthen economic ties (April 29): Mina Aldroubi’s piece was a very interesting read. The visit to the UAE of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe will certainly strengthen the economic ties between these two strong nations. The UAE and Japan already have a good trading relationship, built over a number of decades.Take automobiles for instance; the Japanese Toyota Corolla is widely used in the UAE, both by foreign residents and taxi drivers.Trade between the two countries is likely to increase further. The UAE is a very accomodating nation, hosting people from all over the world. It is one of the main reasons that world leaders choose to visit the UAE so often.K Ragavan, Bangalore

Always ask for receiptK Ragavan wrote: Chaitanya Swamy’s article was a shocking read. School authorities are responsible for the 59 students’ fees which was been collected by the accountant and no receipt was issued. The school is responsible since they were not careful about the accountant who was dealing with laks of rupees. Today, honesty has become a rare commodity. How we can trust people if such things happen. People in educational sector should not act like this. This is terrible for the poor students and their parents.

Letter Published in GulfNews UAE on 29April 18Death is a fitting punishment
The ordinance for death for criminals who rape children below the age of 12 was good to read. After seeing so many rape incidents and many atrocities done to women, the Indian government has agreed to the ordinance of giving the death penalty to rapists, and this was the recent development from India. Even though this received mixed reactions from people, this move is totally welcomed in my opinion. With this ordinance, juveniles raping young children and daughters getting raped by their own fathers will stop and this will be a good indication for the future of Indian women. This is a good move by the Indian government.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 29April 18India must crack down on the menace of quacks
I refer to your article Indian quacks on the run after killing newborn (April 27): it was well-researched, if horrifying, to read about two men posing as doctors, who mutilated a baby to convince the pregnant mother that she had given birth to a girl. Neither was a qualified doctor but a quack. They are prevalent in India, where they are found in almost all states. Some quacks are leading practitioners of medicine and have attained reputations as saviours of the people. But in reality, most are ill-qualified, ill-read and only harm society. The Indian government should be vigilant and eradicate this menace.

Letter Published in Gulf News UAE on 27 April 18Legal system in shambles
India’s Chief Justice was asked to be impeached and the Opposition party got 64 serving members as signatories (“India’s top judge faces impeachment motion”, Gulf News, April 21). This was the latest development in Indian politics - the allegations made by the opposition parties particularly Congress about him and about his mismanagement of cases. Legal experts are afraid this incident was unfortunate and people will get suspicious of the Indian Judiciary if it is passed by the Rajya Sabha. Some experts are under the impression that the judges are not corrupt, this move is purely unprecedented by the political parties. It is a sad state of affairs.

This happens even when, in cases of virus for instance, they are utterly ineffective. Today antibiotics have become more resistant, in spite of so many new discoveries from the pharmaceutical industry. Now more than ever, it is important that we do not take antibiotics when we have no genuine need for them.K Ragavan, Bangalore

Facebook needs to quickly earn back the trust of usersI write in reference to your article Martin Lewis suing Facebook for defamation over ‘fake’ ads (April 23) by Caroline Byrne: it explained very well how the popular social media site Facebook might have been used to mislead users with fake ads for get-rich-quick schemes using Martin Lewis’s face and his MoneySavingExpert.com brand.

Mr Lewis’s decision to sue is another addition to the growing scandal surrounding Facebook. The founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, should tackle this issue and earn the trust of users before it’s too late.

Letter Published in The National UAE ON 24aPRIL 18 S pare a thought for the suffering Afghan peopleIn reference to Ruchi Kumar’s article Fear and loathing in Kabul after ISIS bomb rips through election centre(April 23), this piece made for extremely sad reading. The disgraceful ISIS suicide attack that cruelly ended 57 precious lives and wounded 112 innocent people in Kabul has rightly received condemnation from all four corners of the globe.Afghanistan has been facing a particularly tough time recently – even for a country with a history as violent as its own – at the hands of terrorists. US troops have taken an active role in training the Afghan army in recent years but the fact that the Afghan people are still suffering so acutely from the scourge of terrorism is unacceptable. Of course it is difficult to anticipate a suicide attack but it is high time the international community united to eradicate this menace and save the Afghan people, who have already weathered too much pain and suffering.K Ragavan, Bangalore

On The Ambareesh mystery, K Ragavan writes the intrigue around the actor-politician's moves was a gripping read. He wants that the party should give him complete power to develop Mandya. Earlier he had some rift with Chief Minister Siddaramiah and his decision was not clear, but seems like his intentions are good. Mandya is filled with sugarcane farmers and being a native of Mandya, Ambareesh can fulfill the needs of the people. Will the Congress high command match his ambitions once he accepts the form is something we have to wait and watch

Letter Published in The National UAE on 23April 18   Impeachment case raises questions about judiciary
I write in reference to your story India’s top judge faces impeachment bid (April 21). What particularly interested me was that the bid by opposition parties to impeach the chief justice of India’s top court got 64 serving members as signatories in the latest dramatic development from Indian politics.
The allegations made by the opposition parties, particularly the Congress Party, involve his misbehaviour in cases. One can only hope this case will be thoroughly investigated by the Rajya Sabha, or upper house of the Indian Parliament.
Some, of course, will continue to insist the judge is not corrupt and these allegations have merely been made as a political move. It will be fascinating to see what happens next.

The remarkable director Steven Spielberg, known for his extraordinary films including Jaws, Munich, Jurassic Park and others, is now going to produce and perhaps direct an action adventure film about Second World War pilots in his own inimitable style.
This is something to look forward to during a tough period for Hollywood. The news was announced by Warner Bros chairman Toby Emmerich and the proposed Blackhawk film will no doubt have Mr Spielberg’s directorial touch and technical excellence.

Following a complaint by the Conservator of Forests and Director of Bandipur Tiger Reserve about the nuisance created by motorists who often halt inside the forests and create a nuisance, the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife) has ordered imposition of hefty fine (which runs into several thousands) on irresponsible wanderers. Niranjan Kaggere’s elaborated article was interesting. Having seen people’s rude and boorish behaviour inside the forest, I must say it’s a good proposal. Forests should be preserved safely to protect wild animals as well nature. Ultimately, animals safety is important, says K Ragavan

The Italian voter quoted by Mr Esler illuminates the state we are in. The rot Mr Esler identifies is true not only of the West but also the rest of the world. Now that the UAE cabinet has approved day visas at all UAE airports, people passing through may be able to take in some of what this country has to offer. It is a good development indeed. I refer to your article Indians shocked by two child rape cases (April 13). It was sad and painful to read. Such cases have increased in India in the recent months. The recent rape and murder of an eight-year-old child in Jammu and Kashmir by a gang is unacceptable. In the state of Uttar Pradesh, a girl was allegedly raped nine months ago, a case which has led to the ongoing investigation into a member of the ruling BJP party.
There is much talk in India about the empowerment of women. Incidents such as these are despicable and set back such talk. The government must legislate to speed up the legal process in such cases and no one should be spared from being brought to justice.

Teachers are most respected in society for their noble profession and in the recent years, I wonder why some teachers behave rudely. I do agree they lose their temper if students are not performing, but they should not violently act like this. They should remember that students’ safety is the most important. In my city, many cricket fans go to the stadium to watch and enjoy the hitting of sixes and fours from their favourite players. For matches, Bengaluru’s stadium is always full of children and adults. Already, people are eagerly waiting to watch the IPL matches. On the one hand, the game has developed dramatically and cricket players are paid a lot of money, compared to years ago. On the other hand, the way players are acting these days, whether it comes to ball tampering or other unethical practices, I am worried that the game might lose its image. Still, the game is liked by millions of fans, particularly during the IPL season. No doubt, IPL fever grips both in India and the world.

His Syrian counterpart Bashar Al Assad is indignant and refuses to accept his responsibility for all the recent atrocities that have been carried out on the Syrian people. Mr Trump is waiting for the participation of other allies to strike the Syrian regime and thereby save innocent civilians.
But will he manage to form a coalition strong enough to hinder the Syrian regime? And will strikes succeed in stopping Mr Al Assad from committing further atrocities on his own people? Unfortunately until there is a decisive outcome, the biggest sufferers are Syria’s innocent civilians.

The cover story, Code of Small Things, was an interesting read. Three young Bengalureans are teaching coding to children belonging to families of modest means and their aim is to increase their job prospects and create the change they want to see in the world. The gesture of Shweta Mukesh, Sanjeev Reddy and Mani Kandan is laudable. One-projectold, they identify children from economically-weaker backgrounds, upgrade computer labs in their school, and teach them how to code – free of cost, over weekends, in three months. This includes learning the foundations of coding and problem-solving through code.org, how to write HTML, Javascript and CSS codes, how to make websites, games and robots, interactions with Silicon Valley seniors such as Will Poole who scaled up the Microsoft Windows business, talks about the good and bad side of tech and how to be a responsible consumer or creator, and visits to tech companies. Also, the recent directive by the Karnataka government, asking people to surrender guns in their possession, particularly farmers in Kodagu, Chikmagalur and Hassan districts, has not been welcomed by farmers. They say having a gun at their disposal is necessary as it’s nothing, but selfdefense. However, in my opinion this new rule is good and no individual should be allowed to carry a gun, writes K Ragavan

This actor is known for many remarkable movies, with millions invested in him by the Bollywood film fraternity. While the fact he was granted bail is good news for his fans and the film industry, it is not so good for animal rights groups.

I refer to your op-ed America is great in every field except government (April 2): what an interesting read. Gavin Esler has nicely analysed the present situation in the United States. The op-ed made compelling arguments and made me think. On the one hand, I applaud US President Donald Trump's localisation while on the other hand, I feel he has completely ignored the fact that the government plays an important role in development. He has overlooked how his desire to keep foreigners out of the US will affect the economy and, by extension, his pledge to create jobs. We have to wonder whether Mr Trump will revise his plans to create a better America without disturbing his existing team yet again.

Medical negligence in India
There have been many incidents like this in the past and this is sad (“Two-month-old baby who was denied stretcher dies in hospital”, Gulf News, March 28). Despite the deaths, the hospital authorities should periodically monitor the items to cater to the needs of the hospital. The state government should periodically check government hospitals and premium hospitals. Patients of any gender and age should be taken care of, in my opinion. Among all professions, a doctor’s profession is very great and doctors should take care of the patients without blaming the conditions. They should be supported with full infrastructural facilities. The Bihar Chief Minister is known for his governance and should address this call immediately. I hope in the coming days things may improve and patients should be treated humanely.

Only time can tell In the recent election result from Egypt, people bestowed a second term to Abdul Fateh Al Sissi, and this was a good development from Egyptian politics (“Egypt’s Al Sissi reelected with more than 90 per cent of vote”, Gulf News, March 30). The re-election of Al Sissi to reform Egyptian history, economy, jobs and above all, terrorism and communal clashes should be controlled so that it comes back to the old ways. Tourism should be restored and international visitors should be encouraged to visit. Will the re-elected president fulfil all the aspirations of the people of Egypt? We have to wait and see.

A sad state of affairs
In India, the students were disappointed after the government’s decision to postpone the mathematics examination because the question paper got leaked. The educational sector was the only area where there had been no scandal all these years, but this year that was shattered. This is unacceptable. Postponing exams will have more stress and tension, not only for the students, but for their parents as well. The government should investigate the leak and those guilty should be punished. This should not be repeated again. Students have many plans after their exams are over and postponing one exam will affect their joy. It is a sad state of affairs.

Letter Published in The National UAE on 4April 18 Unemployment has beleaguered India for too long     I refer to the article India's jobs crisis: 25 million applicants for 90,000 vacancies (April 2): Samanth Subramanian's elaborate explanation of the current crisis of unemployment in India was meaningful and thought-provoking. Unemployment has plagued India for too long, no matter who was, or is, in power. Despite the fact that the current Narendra Modi-led government has created numerous policies to boost jobs growth, the number of unemployed continues to increase. Among the causes for this sad reality is the migration from rural to urban India. Another factor that defies all the strategising by governments is the growth of population. The crisis of unemployment will be mitigated somewhat if the government can figure out a way to slow down population growth.K Ragavan, Bangalore

All aboard the bus for future leaders in Afghanistan   I write in reference to your article Bus takes the learning curve to Afghanistan’s youngsters (April 2): following decades of fear as a result of semi-constant bombs and terror attacks, it is heartening to know the people of Afghanistan – particularly its children – are so happy to get this blue bus, their destination the future of their country.Freshta Karim, an Afghan woman who founded the Charmaghz project, bringing books and stimulating academic interest among children, deserves great plaudits. Children were initially reluctant but have received her very well and listen to her read. In an environment as wartorn as modern Afghanistan, education is, in my view, the best way to divert children’s minds away from dark and uncomfortable thoughts. The mobile library concept is truly laudable.K Ragavan, Bengaluru

Letter Published in The National UAE ON 2April 18,  Will Sisi fulfil the aspirations of all Egyptian people?I write in reference to your article Sisi re-elected Egyptian president with overwhelming majority (March 30): in the recent Egyptian election, voters bestowed a second term upon upon Abdul Fateh El Sisi.In my view, this is a good development for Egyptian politics. Mr El Sisi is a reformer, capable of overhauling the economy, bringing jobs to regular people and dealing with terrorism and communal violence. This is likely to have a positive impact on Egypt’s global popularity. Tourism and international visitors will return. But we will have to wait and see if the president’s re-election fulfills the aspirations of all Egyptian people.K Ragavan, Bengaluru
