Small Story 506.
Small Story 506.
Madurai Meenakshi Encounter
Shivaraj reported to his branch office in Madurai as instructed by his management. His company, a leading dyes and chemicals manufacturing firm based in Mysore, had recently opened a new branch in Madurai. Shivaraj, known for his disciplined administration and consistent growth record, had served as Office-in-Charge for 12 years. Impressed by his performance, the management entrusted him with overseeing the Madurai branch, which had been operational for the past two years.
The branch employed 25 staff members, including women. On his arrival, Shivaraj was warmly greeted by everyone. Among them was Assistant Manager Meenakshi, who had joined two years earlier. She was an MBA with strong credentials and had managed the branch efficiently in his absence. In her mid-twenties, Meenakshi was smart, well-mannered, and respected by the team.
The office was located near Mahal, housed in a newly constructed building with modern facilities. Shivaraj, in his mid-fifties, was good-looking and commanded natural respect. He lived with his wife Shalini in SS Colony, a well-developed residential area. Their only daughter, Manjula, studying in the 7th standard, had been admitted to a reputed school just the previous day.
The company enjoyed an excellent reputation across India.
The next day, being Sunday, Shivaraj went to buy vegetables near his house. Suddenly, someone called him in Kannada. Turning around, he was surprised to see his schoolmate, Nandhakumar. The unexpected meeting brought back old memories.
Nandhakumar explained that he had shifted from the consumer division to the pharmaceutical industry and had been working as a District Manager for the past 15 years, settled in Madurai. He spoke fondly of the city, saying,
“Madurai is like our Mysore—traditional, respectful, and welcoming. People here help migrants wholeheartedly, all because of Goddess Meenakshi. I speak fluent Tamil now, and most of my friends are from this place.”
Listening to him, Shivaraj felt a growing admiration for Madurai.
Over the next few days, Shivaraj and his family explored the city—Meenakshi Amman Temple, Alagar Kovil, and other famous landmarks. Slowly, Madurai began to feel like home. What he had never anticipated was how deeply he would connect with the city. Years passed, and Shivaraj completed five fulfilling years in Madurai, enjoying professional growth and a peaceful, positive work environment.
One evening, as he returned from the office, Shalini smiled and said,
“Meenakshi isn’t famous only in your office. Goddess Meenakshi is famous worldwide.”
Shivaraj nodded with a smile.
“Yes,” he agreed, feeling grateful—for the city, the people, and the divine presence that made Madurai truly special.
