Consumers pay theprice
A few days ago i took some guests tovarious malls and supermarkets. We found a lot ofconsumables, from edible oils tochocolates. At a time of mounting inflation, manymalls and supermarkets are thinking that they aredoing a favour to the consumers byfixingprices of several items 5 fils lesser than a dirham. They presume that they are making consumers psychologically happy by doing this.Iam unable to understand the logic because though they fix the odd figure, manyof them take the full dirhamand keep back the smallchange. The logic behind fixing such prices islost in the process.

Ball in Iran court19 June 2008YOUR issue of June 17, ‘Bush wins EU backing on Iran’ was a dramatic developement. Iran is going to face a tough time against the sanctions, as well find it diffcult import fuel. The EU’s main intention is that Iran should not go for uranium enrichment programme. Bush’s stand is firm about Iran’s nuclear programme and the ball is now in Iran’s court.

Better luck next time
It’s vacation timeand several families are planning to go to their homecountries. But there are some who prefer to visit othercountries for a change. Afriendof minewanted to visit the far east.Hegot a good price offer from a travel agency and wanted to know whether I could join him. I decilined the invitation as I had just returned from a tour. I wished him bon voyage.
After a dfew days, I received a call from my friend saying he had cancelled his trip. I was shocked as he been offered fantastic package.
“Well, I paid a price for dilly dallying. When I decided to book, the special offer time had elapsed”, he remarked in a dull voice. I realised the danger involving in delaying decisions.

Fuel to fire
Gulf News’ report on the newly increased visit visa fees came as an unpleasant surprise for expatriates (”Visit visa to the UAE will cost Dh500 from August”, Gulf News, June 8). Earlier, a three-month visit visa cost Dh600, with the renewal fee. However, the new rule adds Dh400 to the already high charge. I request the authorities to reconsider the visa fee structure, especially for the sake of expatriates who occasionally bring down their parents and relatives to the UAE. The fee increase will affect the budget of families and will add fuel to the fire.

Repentant Bush?14 June 2008
REFERENCE to the editorial, ‘Repentant Bush?’ (KT, Jun 13): The piece was interesting and meaningful. It is true that the person responsible for millions of innocent deaths and untold destruction is finally struggling with a guilty conscience. I believe that a person should stick to his conviction, especially when he stands on a platform as huge as Bush’s. But this late awakening of sorts also goes to show that even for a man who was able to mislead the entire world and cause unprecedented death and destruction, the conscience can cause painful guilt pangs. Very impressive piece I must say.

Report published in Gulf today for Famous Play Hayavadana by Actor Girish karnad.
June 12, 2008 by krishnamachari ragavan
BY A STAFF REPORTER
RENOWNED playwright Girish Karnad’s popular Kannada play Hayavadana will be staged in Dubai on June 20 by a team of amateur theatre artistes in the UAE.
Directed by Prakash Rao Payyar, who has over two dozen plays to his credit, the play will be staged at Indian Consulate Auditorium, Dubai.
Payyar said that Hayavadana is one of the most performed plays penned by Girish Karnad. The story is based on a tale from Somadeva’s Vetalapnchavimshika, but also draws on Thomas Mann’s reworking of the tale in The Transposed Heads.
Interwoven into the main plot is the story of “Hayavadana”– a horse- headed man whose quest for wholeness underscores the play’s exploration of identity and reality.
“Hayavadana has been translated and staged not only in the Indian languages, it has been staged across the world in different languages during the past four decades,” said Payyar.
An award ceremony will also take place on the occasion to honour noted producer-director and actor Sreenivas Kappanna with “Dhwani Sriranga Ranga Prashati-2008″.
Dr Chandrashekar Kambara, prominent poet, playwright, folklorist, film director in Kannada and the founder vice-chancellor of Kannada University – Hampi, will be the chief guest.
Kambara has been conferred with many prestigious awards including Padma Shri by Government of India, Kabir Samman, Kalidas Samman and Pampa award. He is also nominated as a member of the Karnataka Legislative Council.
Noted poet and honorary secretary of Kannada Sahitya Parishat Javagarhalli Shivshankar will be guest of honour.
The play will start at 5.30pm. Entry is open for all the theatre lovers.

Horror clinic deaths12 June 2008THE news item in Khaleej Times ‘Milan doctors held in horror clinic deaths’ was painful to read. Performing illegal operations and misguiding the patients are against a doctor’s practice. They are supposed to alleviate the suffering of humanity irrespective of caste and creed, this core purpose today is defeated. Where is the value of the Hippocratic oath.? The World Health Organisation and other institutes should implement a law for this type of malpractice.
