The world is watching Turkey
The article on the crisis in Turkey was interesting “Can Turkey’s Erdogan stay in power?” (Tuesday, June 24). Turkey is a world-famous tourist destination, and a link between the West and the East. This political turmoil is a sad state of affairs. Opposition parties are fighting against the ruling party, headed by the prime minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and other activist groups are also creating big problems. The future of Turkey hangs in the balance, and the world is watching with bated breath to see if Mr Erdogan will continue.

Price of rice must be controlled
The article “Retailers struggle to honour price caps” (Friday, June 27) was quite interesting. To learn that the price of rice had doubled in eight months was alarming.
The majority of people in South Asian countries, and most of the UAE’s expatriates, use rice as the primary staple in their diet. I hope the Government continues to monitor grocers and fix a reasonable price cap. We are already faced with heavy inflation, high rents and traffic problems; food needs to be kept affordable.

Do not litter
While waiting for a friend inside an air-conditioned bus shelter, I was shocked to see used soft drink cans strewn on the floor. I appreciate the efforts made by the authorities in providing bus shelters for passengers. Thereby, I was very upset with the behaviour of certain inconsiderate persons. People should not behave in an uncivil manner and should always help in keeping the city clean.

Perfect ten
For many film heroes, donning a single role it-self proves to be a major challenge. But a south indian actor has now comeout with a hit film, where he appears in ten different roles.Among the different roles played by hero Kamalhassan, the ones as Fletcher, grandmother and george bush turned out to be the best.Iam not much interested in films, but a friendhad dropped in from Dubai and insisted that I should go with him to watch the film, titled Dasavadaram. With much reluctance I joined him,but found myself applauding loudly whenever I liked a scene. So much so that my friend cursed himself for having takenme along.Could you notwatch the film quitely? Was his comment.
Well, good films have this ability to draw cheers.was all that I could reply.

Salik night relief
28 June 2008
“NO SALIK at new gates at night (KT June 27) was good news for motorists. The proposed introduction of Salik at Al Maktoum Bridge in September and the RTA’s decision of waiving the charges from 10pm to 6am is a welcome one. This will benefit many people.

WORDS AND DEEDS
EMPTY WORDS by Saleh Al-Shaibany (June 6-12) was interesting. Many people speak without giving their words a thought. They don’t realise that the words they utter may wound the feelings of others. This is due to lack of maturity, exposure and knowledge. Making promises is easy, but implementing them is tough. I have seen many people who never make promises, but they act. Keep it up Weekend! – K Ragavan, Ajman

Environment protection
23 June 2008
YOUR issue of June 22 that over 500 people took part in an eco protection campaign, was interesting to read. Ras Al Khaimah is one of the upcoming emirates and for it to conduct this campaign is widely appreciated. One of the main global initiatives today is protection of the environment. The emirate has also received many comments from nationals as well expatriates on the 500-metre banner on eco protection. I suggest the Government should have periodical campaigns to highlight the importance of protecting the environment. Voluntry organisations should also come forward and contribute to this cause.

Respect our bus shelters
I appreciate the new air-conditioned bus shelters in Dubai, but wish the public would show more respect towards public property. Cans are strewn about the shelter. I am upset that other bus passengers would leave cans behind; they need to show more civic pride and keep the bus shelters clean.
