Jobs lost, here ‘n’ there

A few days ago, I received a call from a friend. He told me that an airline had been offering a good price with visa for a month and asked if he would be able to get a job.

He is in the field of Information Technology and had lost his job in a recent scandal of a wellknown company in India.

I did not say “yes” or “no” to him. He had seen the beautiful malls, heard about the famous shopping festival and the much- talked about Metro Rail system through various TV channels and wanted to visit the UAE to make a career.

The other day when I was travelling to Dubai from Sharjah I heard a passenger behind me talking in my mother tongue. He was telling someone loudly that he was returning to India and asked them to look for an opening.

He had ostensibly been given a one-month notice by his employer.

When I received a call from my Indian friend, I told him that I would send a mail and he could decide after reading that.

I just remembered a proverb: The grass is always green on the other side.

Language Barrier

It was interesting to read about fashion designer Salma Khan (Verbatim, wknd., July 10). On the one hand she was very happy that her work was recognised in Paris Fashion Week, and on the other hand she was upset because she could not reach her stall in time. The reason was the language barrier. In Paris, everyone only speaks French. Because of the language barrier she had to waste a whole day. This was a good experience.

More Bus Stops, Please!

17 July 2009

I travel regularly to Al Tawun Mall in Sharjah, where my office is situated. Despite Sharjah Transport having introduced buses for local areas there is no bus for this place.

Buses plying to Dubai via Al Wadha and Al Khan should stop here, too, as many offices are situated
in the area.

All buses to Dubai from Sharjah stop only at Al Mulla Plaza. If one has to take a taxi from Rolla to Al Tawun, the charge would come
to Dh13 which is quite high. I request the authorities
to look into having
more stops on the way.

Your article Cavalcade of reckless driving was nice and impressive.Especially on thuresdays and other holidays people go fast to their destinations ,irrespective of traffic.Because of the Holiday mood. This creates lot of inconvenience to others,in terms of accidents.Recent statistic from WHO,More accidents are reported in UAE.Apart from accidents Uae roads are dangerous, the report added.Motorists should drive calmly ,and erraticly should not change from slow track to fast track. Many of the accidents are more visible due to erratic drive and changing the lines frequently.Patient driving ,follow the trafficrules are more important for motorists.Inspite of so many rules and regulations from the RTA ,Authorities every day accidents are increasing is the pity.Ido agree at this hour of Global resession every body tensed, but patienceis more required.

AC shelters are not functioning
In some of Dubai’s air-conditioned bus stop shelters, the ACs are not working.
The RTA constructed these shelters to protect passengers from the hot sun, but to my surprise in three or four bus shelters at various locations, the AC is not functioning.

Since the coming months will be even more hot, I request the authorities look into this important issue. Otherwise the purpose of constructing the AC shelters is defeated.
