Comply, please

Gulf News’s report on the villa fire that killed many was sad and painful to read (”Death toll in Naif blaze expected to rise,” Gulf News August 27). In the recent months, a lot of fires have taken place in factories, warehouses and residential areas. This recent incident is simply pathetic. This happens despite the fact that the Civil Defence carries out periodical checks. Another reason could be residents who do not comply with the department’s requirements. Every place should have fire extinguishers installed at various points, for easy access. I pray for the victims and their families.

THE news that 10 people died in a fire at a villa was sad and painful to read. In the recent months, several fire accidents took place in factories, warehouses and residential areas. Tuesday’s incident was pathatic. In spite of civil defence’s periodic inspections, these things are happening. This is mainly due to non-compliance of civil defence department’s regulations. I pray for the victims and the aggrieved family members.

Take it easy

policy

Some friends from Dubai recently visited my house and we had a small debate. Among the topics we discussed were inflation and traffic. Most friends felt that it may take a few more months for the traffic scene to improve though the RTA authorities are doing their best to ease the situation.

The topic then turned to accidents which show an upward trend. I listed the reasons as restlessness, tension and insecurity.

Globally, inflation and traffic scenes are not much different and so the UAE is not an exception. Calm attitude, avoiding speeding and better concentration while driving on the part of motorists could save several lives.

“You don’t drive. If you drive and fail to meet an appointment because of a traffic jam, you would also grumble and turn tense like us,” a friend argued.

“That’s why I don’t drive,” I just laughed.

Stranger

at the mall

A few days ago, I was in the food court of a mall waiting to meet a friend.

Suddenly, a stranger appeared and requested if he could take the seat I had reserved for my friend. Since my friend failed to reach in time, I offered the seat to him. He smiled and introduced himself. He had come on a visit looking for a good opening in marketing.

He started asking me about the scope and opportunities in the UAE. I told him that the country was progressing tremendously and the opportunities were bright. I offered him tea and we discussed various topics, including Bollywood films.

Since he was from Mumbai, he was happy. Incidentally, I worked for a Mumbai-based Pharmaceutical company for two decades and that helped me discuss elaborately about that city.

After a few minutes my friend arrived and greeted the stranger. I asked him, “Do you know him?”

My friend replied: This is my old friend for whom I had enquired from you about a job opening.”

Coincidences. They are indeed strange.

Use ful article.
The Article Do Ihave Rheumatoid Arthritis?(July 18).Was informative.Being a former pharmaceutical person,Iwas aware of the drugs used three decades ago.Phenyl butazone and corticosteroid combination gives immediate relief. But because of the side effects, this combination was withdrawn from the market.Later came Ibuprufen.Again because of its side effects and patient’s resistance to it,this too went in to the background. In spite of so many advanced methodsof treatment, rheumatoid arthritisstill remains a question mark. The article in your magazine was useful.Keep it up.

Big family+ small flat…
15 August 2008

THE lead story in your newspaper ‘Big family+small room= No residence visa!’ (KT, August 14) makes for a sad reading. On the one hand this is a good move from the DNRD but on the other hand the Government should fix the studio flat, one bedroom flat, 2 and 3 bedroom flats tariff, as per the salary structure of Dubai. A person getting Dh80,000 per annum cannot afford to pay Dh60000 as rent. Even studio flat are also very expensive. And to pay more with limited accommodation for the family size is also not any solution. I request the authorities to look into this major problem that most of the expatriates are facing.

Hygiene should come first
Making a hygiene course mandatory is a good move, “Compulsory hygiene course for Abu Dhabi’s food workers” (August 10).

If food items are not properly handled, consumers run the risk of getting very sick.

News of increased vigilance is certainly welcome.

After all, food is the basis for creating a healthy society.
