A friend
indeed
Recently, a close friend rang up to ask: “Am I not your friend?”
I was stunned. He then gave the answer. “How is your wife? Is she recovering?”
I realised why he put that question.
A few days ago, my wife slipped and hurt her leg during a routine evening walk. When I was waiting for the X-ray result at the hospital, another common friend saw me. I understood that this common friend might have informed my other friend. I apologised for not having informed him about the mishap.
He replied: “It’s my duty to help you at this hour, that was the reason I got upset.”
That same evening he visited us at home and enquired from my wife about her wellbeing.
A friend in need is a friend indeed.

Stressbuster That today’s global economy will affect people’s normal lifestyle is certainly true. People are still living in the way they used to live, without coming to terms with the new reality. This can lead to stress and tension. Everything from inflation to traffic can increase this stress so it’s important to follow the tips given in your Nutritionist column. A balanced diet is important to get rid of stress, particularly at this time of global recession.

Preplanned
The arrest warrant on Sudan’s President Omar Hassan Al Bashir was a preplanned development – one which is very sad and painful to read (”Al Bashir warrant mat affect Egypt’s security,” Gulf News, March 8).
Sudan is blessed with natural resources and oil was the main attraction for Bashir’s warrant. If the International Criminal Court (ICC) wants to try Sudan’s president for war crimes, what about the war crimes conducted by ex-US president George Bush? This is unfair and unacceptable.

Help and land
in trouble
Last week after finshing some work at Bur Dubai, I wanted to travel by Abra to Deira for a change.
Till last year, Abra was the cheapest mode of conveyance in the UAE, at an affordable price of 50 fils, but now the fare has doubled.
Yet, compared to other modes of travel, this is not only economical but also time saving. I was about to board when suddnly a friend called out. We had a chat for a few minutes and he left.
While waiting for another boat, I saw a person taking out his purse to take change for the ticket, but a Dhs5 note was carried away by the wind.
Another person ran behind it and brought it to the owner. After receiving the note, instead of thanking him, the guy started shouting: “Mine was a Dhs50 note. Where is that?”
The person who ran behind the note was taken aback.
After seeing the drama, I intervened and came to the rescue of the helpful person.
“Yours was a Dhs5 note. I saw with my own eyes,” I explained.
The accuser relented reluctantly.
These are the people who bring a bad reputation to humanity. Many hesitate to help because of such people.

Sanaa stories. Your travel article about Yemen was very interesting to read. The beautiful panoramic view captured by the writer was nicely elaborated by the pluses and minuses of the country. It was interested to read about the local people and their hospitality and culture. What impressed me the most was the way the writer rated Yemen against the UAE, Qatar and Oman. But for political instability and some attacks against western targets Sanaa would not be thought of in the same way.

Good news & pocket pinch
Several friends rang me up to share their joy over the winning of eight Oscar awards by the movie “Slumdog Millionaire.” Music Director AR Rahman bagged two awards for his song and music composing. Even though the picture elicited controversial comments from critics for depicting India’s poverty and ignoring the other side of the story, I am happy that the prestigious awards were bestowed on the team.
And for a change recession came in handy as an excuse to a friend. Even as his colleagues insisted that he should throw a party, he casually replied, “I would have happily agreed if not for recession.”
