Putin-Bush talks
9 April 2008
WITH reference to the editorial (KT, April 7), ‘Photo Opportunity’, the piece was meaningful and thought-provoking.
Both Putin and Bush have not taken any concrete step to settle differences. It’s a pity. Before their tenure, I don’t think we can expect any solution to the missile defence problem.

Shortage of buses
Despite the Roads and Transport Authority’s (RTA) introduction of many new buses, the traffic congestion has not reduced in Rolla Square, in Sharjah. At times people have to wait for more than half an hour for buses to arrive, delayed due to heavy traffic. With the advent of summer, it has become even more difficult for the elderly, women and children to stand in the hot sun without any shelter. Even though the other routes for Bur Dubai, Satwa and Abu Dhabi have been shifted from the Rolla bus stand, the crowd has not reduced.

Gulf Film Festival
13 April 2008
IT WAS interesting to read that Dubai will be hosting the first Gulf Film Festival (KT April 11) and that among 146 films which will be screened, 40 are international movies. It is another feather in the emirate’s cap — Dubai has many ‘firsts’ to its credit — creating awareness in caring for people, setting up knowledge-based institutions and now making its mark in the entertainment industry. These efforts are to be applauded. Many Indian films are shot in Dubai — a city which has some beautiful locations. Keep it up Dubai !

Kudos to Abulhoul
16 April 2008
THE entry of 11-year-old Emirati girl Abdulla Abulhoul’s animation film in the ongoing Gulf Film Festival (as reported on April 15) is really applaudable. That she finished the work in 11 days is worthy to be mentioned. I am confident the film, Galagolia, will be recognised in the festival. Recently, a 11-year-old Indian boy, Darsheel, bagged the Best Actor Award for his role in Bollywood actor Aamir Khan’s Taare Zameen Par. Eleven is a lucky number. Kudos to Abulhoul.

Education must be world class

Dr Hanif Hassan’s ambitious plans to improve the UAE’s education sector are highly appreciated by the population. It is about time the Government planned a total overhaul of the system. The country already benefits greatly from its well-developed infrastructure. We are one of the world’s major trading centres, we have a top-quality road network and a developing transport system in general.
But a country’s most valuable assets are its educated people, and I am confident that the minister’s vision will improve this situation.
I think he will certainly succeed in making the UAE one of the world’s great centres of learning. Ultimately, knowledge is power.
Congratulations to the Minister for Education.

Boy’s death is not acceptable

The news that a three-year-old kindergarten boy died on a bus in Abu Dhabi is simply not acceptable. It is the duty of the school authorities to instruct bus drivers to check if all the pupils have got off the bus or not.
This is one of many tragic incidents that have occurred recently in this country and the authorities need to find out why it is happening. I pray for the innocent victim and the aggrieved parents.

China needs safer trains

The news about the tragic train accident in China was difficult to read. Very sad. The death toll of 70, with 400 injured, is a frightening figure, incomprehensible. This is the worst train accident that China has seen in a long time and I hope they do not have to experience such a tragic accident again. Trains are essential for the people of China, they depend on trains to traverse their vast country. I hope and pray they can implement the correct safety systems to make sure this does not happen again.

Washington must back initiative

Your editorial, Turkey’s turn to talk peace (Opinion, April 28) was meaningful and thought provoking.
Israel and Syria are opposites and have a long way to go before they can reach an agreement, but at least the Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan is trying — his peace initiative is appreciated throughout the region. The main problem is Israel’s close friend, Washington, and it is one of the major obstacles that Erdogan will have to overcome if the talks are to be a success.
I cannot understate the importance of what he is doing. The entire Middle East peace process depends on agreement between Israel and Syria. Whether he will succeed in this mission is questionable. There will soon be a new administration in Washington, and which party will gain control is anybody’s guess.
But one thing is for sure: the ball will be in their court.

Myanmar needs more aid

Regarding the ongoing crisis in Myanmar, the support from the United Nations and countries such as the UAE has been laudable.
But the reaction from the government in Myanmar is ridiculous. Blocking the aid workers and journalists is inexcusable. These actions will magnify the already disastrous consequences of cyclone Nargis. The international community should come down on them hard.
In the end it is the innocent people who will suffer from the government’s general inaction and failure to allow the UN planes to land.
Many organisations are now hesitating to send money and aid in the relief effort because they suspect it will not reach the intended recipients.
