Injurious to others’ health Of late, I am happy to go to Dubai from Sharjah for my work as there is not much traffic. Most schools are closed and recession has also led to retrenchment from many companies. A few days ago, after collecting my ticket from the fish market bus stop I came to the bus stand area in Deira. There were some 15 passengers waiting in queue. I joined them. In a few minutes, I felt some some irritation in my right eye. I then realised that a man standing ahead of me was smoking and it was affecting me. I requested him not to smoke. He just glanced at me and moved off. I felt better a little later. I am happy that a ban has now been imposed on smoking in public places like malls and restaurants. Apart from his mistake, the man did not even bother to as much say sorry.

Fat and fatter
I enjoyed reading your article about obesity (Why are we so fat?, wknd., March 13). The fact that obesity is a global problem is very true, as is the fact that we need to do something about it in the UAE. The fact that we are at number 18 in the world when it comes to obesity is quite alarming. I believe one of the main causes of this is lack of parental control. Exercise is the obvious remedy to this problem, but I do think that the government should educate the public more with campaigns.
